More Information
Makoonsag Daycare, which translates to “little bears” in the Cree language, focuses on the practice of early childhood development and training for Indigenous childcare workers. The facility is completely integrated into the community; many parents attend the Urban Circle Training Centre next door. The daycare’s curriculum is established with Indigenous teachings and traditions, creating a positive intergenerational learning environment.
The building previously housed retail space, and earlier, two historical homes. It was redeveloped by Prairie Architects Inc., and Indigenous Architect Eladia Smoke. While collaborating with Elder, Stella Blackbird, parents, families, youth, and greater community control of the planning and architecture design. (not sure what this means – maybe: They collaborated on the design with Elder Stella Blackbird and sought input from the community.) The area behind the centre was transformed from three residential lots to a natural playscape that reflects a meadow.
The design features a spirit room, which Blackbird saw in a vision, comprised of a domed structure inspired by a traditional sweat lodge. The north-south directions are prominent throughout the building, through the exterior to the interior, highlighted by skylights along the path, bringing natural daylight in, and defining open pathways. The exterior that faces Selkirk Avenue incorporates the four colours of the medicine wheel, and compliments the neighbouring façade of the Urban Circle Training Centre.
The official opening took place in May of 2012 and the building achieved LEED® Certified status in 2014.
