The Exchange District National Historic Site is a 20-block collection of some of the oldest and finest skyscrapers, warehouses, banks and theatres in Canada. Of particular note is the use of terra cotta on many of the buildings. The tour will also include the recent rehabilitation of significant historic buildings to house Red River College's Culinary Institute and other faculties, as well as contemporary design such as the OMS Market Stage (The Cube).
Join us for a 90 minute walking tour looking at the development and evolution of the district and some notable buildings spanning over 100 years. The route is wheelchair and stroller accessible.
Tour leaders will be Sheila Grover (architectural historian) and Greg Thomas (historian). Their most recent publication is 100 Summers on Lake Winnipeg. Sheila and Greg are currently working toward a Social and Architectural History of the Exchange District
