Louis Riel (1844-1885) was a Métis leader and founder of Manitoba. Riel played a central role in the Red River Resistance (1869-1870) and North West Resistance (1885). For the latter, Riel was convicted of high treason and hanged in Regina on November 16th, 1885. He is remembered for his fight to protect the rights of Métis people. In Manitoba, Louis Riel Day is recognized as a provincial holiday on the third Monday of February.
