Details

At less than 150 years old, Winnipeg, Manitoba and its architecture is young. Yet, throughout this city and province, countless buildings are constructed of a million year old material extracted from the depths below.

This is Tyndall Stone. Both regionally commonplace and unique worldwide, the mottled, fossil-rich limestone formed 450 million years ago, in the basin of a shallow sea near the equator. For the last hundred years Tyndall Stone has been quarried near Garson, Manitoba and shipped across Canada and as far away as Europe, Australia, China and Japan.

Join us for a free 90-minute tour exploring several Tyndall Stone buildings downtown. On this tour you’ll learn about the beginnings of the Manitoba quarry industry, how to spot and identify fossils, and the curious story of how Tyndall Stone got it’s name.

The tour route is fully accessible for wheelchairs, strollers and bicycles.

Moving Matter: Tyndall Stone in the City is the second in a series of explorations leading to the publication of Moving Matter: Tyndall Stone, a book chronicling the use of Manitoba Tyndall limestone in architecture and design. The book is written by Abigail Auld and will be published as part of The Winnipeg Architecture Foundation (WAF) book series in 2017.
