More Information

When this small elementary school was first built in 1963, Headingley did not function so much as a suburb but as a small and separate community, raising taxes and making independent decisions; it has since joined the St. James-Assiniboia School Division.

Design Characteristics

  • Not far off the main road, Roblin Boulevard, Phoenix School was initially only ten classrooms in size with plans for an auditorium/gym that had to come later (possibly in 1965), constructed from a wood frame and deck, concrete block partitions and a brick face; it is one storey high resting nearly at grade
  • The earliest section can be seen clearly with its full windows across the front (east) elevation; the canopied front entrance straddles the two older sections of the east side
  • The yard contains a play structure and fields that give way to some woods
