More Information

This medium-size elementary school was the first French-only school built by the St. Boniface School Division; it opened in 1958 with six classrooms, which form the southern part of the present facade along Rue Langevin. Taché School won a Massey Medal Mention in 1958; each classroom was accessible from the outside and centrally located project areas eliminated the wasted space of corridors.

Design Characteristics

Materials:

brick, concrete

Neighbourhood:

St. Boniface

  • Constructed of concrete block, another addition was made at a right angle on the north side, closely following the design of the 1958 portion; some of the original windows in these two wings have endured intact and are a unique design although most of the early windows have been partially filled in and painted with bright murals; four-inch perforated `shadow block` made an interesting screen on the south side entrance
  • In 1963 a two-storey red brick addition was made on the northwest corner to the tie closer together the earlier wings, and this was further expanded with a large multi-purpose room/gym in 1963; beyond that there are portables in the rear to continue the footprint in a U-shape
  • The little kids’ play structure is on a small patch adjacent to the school while older students use a yard well to the rear of the lot and beside a fenced industrial site
