Design Characteristics

Neighbourhood:

Sargent Park

  • This building was opened in 1957 as a small day school for deaf students; it was given a large addition in 1972 to convert it to a school for children who were mentally challenged
  • In 1989, that school closed and re-opened as the Prince Charles Education Resource Centre for professional staff in this division
  • While certainly vestiges of the early school remain, especially on the north side, most of the facade has been altered severely, windows removed and walls resurfaced
  • Original with a long and narrow footprint running parallel to the street, it now extends back wider, and wraps around a lovely courtyard with one or two big trees, protected on the north side by a three-bay concrete screen
  • The main entrance has been given a mansard roof to tie it with an auditorium addition on the northeast end, as well as a facing of fieldstone
  • The yard to the rear is huge and reaches all the way north to Tec Voc School
