More Information

Jacob Penner Park, first called Notre Dame Park, was developed in 1894. It’s one of the oldest parks in Winnipeg. In the early 1900s, many Icelandic immigrants lived in the area around it. The site also held  Winnipeg’s tree nursery from 1900 until the 1920s, growing American elms. Thousands of trees were planted along Winnipeg’s streets. The park changed over time. In 2013, it was renovated, and now has amenities like a basketball court, a skateboard park and a community garden. Many of the houses across from the park were homes of prominent members of the early Icelandic community.
