More Information
In 1894, a committee of the newly (1887) established congregation of Shaarey Zedek Synagogue purchased four hectares of land to create the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. The first burial took place that same year. The Shaarey Zedek Cemetery is the second Jewish cemetery in Winnipeg; the first was the Children of Israel Cemetery at 484 Almey Street. An earlier site was deemed inhospitable due to flooding. The cemetery contains two mausoleums (circa 1917 and circa 1947); there are very few Jewish mausoleums found in Canada.
