About this film

This documentary invites architects, historians, social housing advocates and citizens to reflect on the creation of affordable housing and why it is about more than simply architecture and design. Beginning with an innovative large-scale affordable housing development conceived during the Great Depression, through to Willow Park Housing Co-operative – Canada’s first permanent housing co-operative for families – and the present-day reimagining of the iconic Hudson’s Bay Company building, the film challenges our collective social conscience on what it takes to truly create a home and a community.

The Winnipeg Architecture Foundation (WAF) is proud to have partnered on this remarkable 44-minute documentary, which explores the work and legacy of Green Blankstein Russell, one of Manitoba’s most influential architectural firms. The film was inspired in part by WAF’s publication, GBR: Green Blankstein Russell – An Architectural Legacy.

Written and directed by Danielle Sturk and produced by Lulubelle Media in partnership with WAF.
