More Information
164 Langside Street was built in stages, the first of which was a single storey brick structure erected in 1912. This component cost $ 8,000 to build and was designed by architect Edgar Prain. It was built by the Daykin Scott Construction Company. In 1927, the two top storeys were added as residential space.
The building housed a succession of grocery stores until the 1970s, when mounting violence against store employees caused the final grocery operation to shut down. 164 Langside Street was left vacant for many years.
Happily, in 1999 the building was purchased and renovated by architect Don Courtinage and artist Pat Courtinage, who remodelled the space into an architect’s office and an artist’s studio. In the twenty-teens, under new ownership, the building was renovated by Monteyne Architecture and the ground floor was converted into a cocktail bar named Langside Grocery, a tribute to the building’s history.
In 2026, Langside Grocery re-opened to customers after being briefly closed for renovations enacted by the building’s new owners, Liz Wreford and Peter Sampson, who have converted the top two stories into office space for Public City Architecture.
