More Information
Opened at the height of the philosophy of open-air teaching and the reduction of external stimuli, Elwick elementary school has almost no natural light penetrating its interior, a certain indicator of a layout that most likely no longer exists. Plans for this school were not available to view.
The school was named for the community activist Neville Meldrum Elwick and his wife Ursula Stella Peterman (c1914-1967)
Design Characteristics
| Materials: | concrete, limestone |
|---|---|
| Height: | 2 storeys |
| Neighbourhood: | The Maples |
- Two-storeys high, it forms a series of cubes pulled together by walls of limestone and precast concrete panels, separated with a band of turquoise time that is also used on the doors
- Seemingly built as a unified whole, the design has much integrity to its 1973 construction
