More Information
The original school on the property, known as Isbister School, was constructed in 1898 by contractor D. D. Woods and provincial architect Samuel Hooper. The original school faces Vaughan Street and still stands behind the 2004 Winnipeg Adult Education Centre. The two buildings are constructed in greatly differing styles.
The old school house was designed in the Queen Anne Style. It has three storeys with street level windows for the basement and is topped with a metal clad cupola. The cupola is topped with a decorative finial. The school was highly decorated in an effort to attract high attendance, as it was thought that parents would be proud to send their children to a fancy looking school. The school was made of rough stone and brick work topped with a truncated hip roof, pedimented gables, and protruding bays. In 1966 the building became the Winnipeg Adult Education Centre.
A large addition was made to the rear of the old school house in 2004. This addition contrasts greatly with the original school. The building uses glass curtains and a steel frame which connects to the corridors of the old school. There is also brick work on the addition which doesn’t match the original brick. A plaque was installed on the new addition to commemorate Isbister School.
