568 Main Street

Established near the turn of the century by J. Udow, the Boston Clothing Co. was a family-owned and -operated store which boasted of its policy of “EXCEPTIONAL VALUES IN QUALITY MEN’S WEAR ITEMS.” Near the middle of the twentieth century the Company erected a new store just north of Winnipeg’s downtown core on Main Street at the corner of Pacific Avenue – a branch marketed as “Largest Men’s Wear Store in Town.” The building’s architect was Charles Faurer, one of the city’s early modernist practitioners. Faurer’s design featured a projecting, sculptural fin-wall of cut stone, an echo of the dramatic roadside modern architectural genre known as “Googie.”
