More Information
Opened in 1963, Green Acres school is a one storey building with a ‘butterfly’ roof shape. Its original T-shaped plan had 12 classrooms, a library, a gymnasium, and offices to accommodate 280 students from grades 1 to 8.
The school was the first pre-fab (pre-engineered) school building in Manitoba. It opened 5 months later than planned, due in part to problems with the pre-engineered roof and wall systems.
Its steel and glass design was altered in the 1970s energy-saving era as evidenced by the many small windows, an approach seen throughout the province.
A new gymnasium extension has been recently constructed at the rear of the school. Its two-tone masonry construction contrasts with the simple lines and materials of the original school.
