More Information

The site of the Battle of Seven Oaks was designated a National Historic Site in 1920. It celebrates a June 19th, 1816 battle between a group of Métis and a group of Red River settlers. It was the culmination of a conflict between the North West Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company over the fur trade. Also, the Métis saw a threat to their traditional way of life from the Red River Settlement. Governor Robert Semple, leader of the Hudson’s Bay Company men and the Selkirk settlers, was killed along with 20 of his men. The land to build the monument was donated in 1881 by Marak Inkster.
