More Information
As the town of Transcona grew from a handful of houses beside the CNR shops to a boomtown, its growing population needed services. The Bank of Toronto built this structure to replace its 1911 branch, which it had outgrown. As with most banks of the time, its classically inspired design was intended to show stability and security. When the bank moved out in the early 1940s, the town of Transcona bought the building to use as municipal offices. In 1980, the then vacant building became the first in Transcona added to Winnipeg’s list of historical resources. A year later, the Transcona Museum moved in, officially opening its doors in 1983 with a mission to preserve and promote Transcona’s community spirit.
