More Information
Upper Fort Garry was a large Hudson’s Bay Company complex, strategically situated near the junction of the Red and the Assiniboine Rivers. It was the economic, political, and social centre of the Red River Settlement. The Fort was gradually demolished between 1881 and 1888. The Upper Fort Garry Gate is the only structure that’s left. The multi-level gate, made of limestone and wood, is one of the few structure erected in the 1800s that remains in Winnipeg.
