More Information
The City of Winnipeg established the park, formerly called St. James Park, in the 1890s to serve a city growing westward. As well as community gardens and recreational space, the park is home to multiple statues commemorating World War I. One of these is the 44th Canadian Infantry Vimy Ridge Monument, originally erected on Vimy Ridge, France, by the 44th Battalion in 1917 and moved in 1924 to the park. On June 15, 1967, the restored monument was dedicated in the renamed Vimy Ridge Memorial Park. The park was renovated in 2017 to commemorate the battle’s 100th anniversary. New entrances with pillars and banners enhance the park’s prominence along Portage Avenue. An accessible path system was added and there is a new memorial for the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders.
