Design Characteristics

Neighbourhood:

Rossmere-A

  • This is a signature Smith Carter school from 1958; it has exposed rafters under wide eaves and fin-like buttresses that bring down the frame around each classroom; although the windows have been partially filled in, the essential design remains intact, with its clean lines, stripped-down facades and structural frame clearly proclaimed, it is an early and fully modern design that would have been unthinkable ten years before
  • This building had a four-room addition on the west side in 1965 that was completely harmonious with the original piece
  • The site is somewhat small but benefits from the green backdrop of the golf course
