More Information
World-renowned sculptor Dr Leo Mol made a gift of his collection to the city of Winnipeg, on the condition that a public outdoor gallery be established.
Opened on 18 June 1992, the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden is located in the north-west corner of Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg’s largest urban greenspace, adjacent to the historic English Garden. Designed by Hilderman Thomas Frank Cram Landscape Architects, now HTFC, the project was led by landscape architects Garry Hilderman and Heather Cram. The garden – with curving paths, lawns, planting and water – provides a setting for over 300 works from the Leo Mol collection.
At the centre of the garden is the Leo Mol Gallery, a small glazed pavilion designed by Stechesen Katz. Its transparency allows views into and through the gallery, integrating the display of maquettes and sculpted busts with the surrounding greenery and lily pond.
The garden also incorporates the former schoolhouse that served as Mol’s studio. The Leo Mol Schoolhouse Studio retains moulds, plaster casts and other materials from his practice, offering an insight into the processes involved in creating his bronze sculptures. Together, the garden, gallery and studio form an integrated setting for the preservation and interpretation of Mol’s work.
The garden is open year-round.
